What Is the Meaning of Homeopathic?
A Practitioner's Honest Guide
By a Licensed Occupational Therapist and Certified Homeopath
If you've ever Googled "what does homeopathic mean," you've probably landed on a textbook definition that left you with more questions than answers. This post is different. I'm going to explain homeopathy the way I wish someone had explained it to me — through real experience and a little bit of my own story.
How I Found Homeopathy (Or How It Found Me)
I didn't come to homeopathy through a textbook. I came to it through sheer exhaustion.
I had four children in four years. My youngest was born when I was one week away from turning forty years old. If you can imagine the level of physical depletion that comes with that — the hormonal shifts, the sleep debt, the nutritional demands of four pregnancies in rapid succession — then you understand why my doctors, as well-meaning as they were, simply didn't have the tools to help me. There was no prescription for what I was experiencing. There was no quick fix.
So I started investigating. I explored fermented foods and nutritional supplements. I studied herbs. And somewhere along that path, I stumbled upon homeopathy. It became a turning point — not just for my health, but for my entire philosophy of what it means to truly support the body.
Today, I bring together my background as a licensed occupational therapist, my study of homeopathy, Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA), and a deep respect for the body's own intelligence. What I've learned has changed how I help my clients — and it started with that exhausted, depleted forty-year-old mother of four.
So, What Does "Homeopathic" Actually Mean?
The word homeopathic comes from the Greek homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering). The foundational principle, developed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s, is often summarized as "like cures like" — the idea that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can, in very small amounts, help relieve similar symptoms in someone who is unwell.
Homeopathic remedies are prepared through a process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking), resulting in highly diluted preparations. These remedies come in the form of small pellets, tablets, or liquid sprays — and this is where one of the most common misconceptions comes in.
What Homeopathy Is NOT: Clearing Up the Biggest Misconceptions
Misconception #1: You Take It Like a Vitamin or Supplement
Many people assume that homeopathic remedies are swallowed like supplements — with a glass of water at mealtimes. That's not how it works.
Homeopathic remedies are most commonly sprayed under the tongue or taken as a few small pellets placed in the mouth. They are absorbed sublingually, meaning through the mucous membranes. This is an important distinction — they are not digested in the same way food or a capsule supplement would be.
Misconception #2: You Can't Eat for an Hour Before or After
A very common piece of advice circulating online is that you must avoid eating for a full hour before and after taking a homeopathic remedy. This tends to put people off.
The reality is more practical: your mouth simply needs to be clear. As a general guideline, avoiding food or drink for approximately 15 minutes before taking a remedy is usually sufficient. That said, very sensitive individuals may find they respond better with a longer window. Like many things in holistic health, it's not one-size-fits-all — but it is far less restrictive than the one-hour rule suggests.
Because the remedies are taken sublingually in small amounts, they can also be taken more frequently than most people expect, without the risk of the significant side effects that often accompany conventional medications.
Two Real Cases That Stayed With Me
Case Study 1: My Own Shingles Recovery
Shingles is notoriously brutal. Anyone who has had it — or watched someone suffer through it — knows that it can linger for weeks, sometimes leaving lasting nerve pain long after the rash clears. When I developed shingles, I turned to a specific homeopathic protocol (the Banerji Protocol for shingles) and followed it consistently.
Within one week, I had significant relief and recovery.
I share this not to make extraordinary claims, but because lived experience matters. I wasn't just reading about homeopathy — I was testing it on myself, at a moment when I genuinely needed help.
Case Study 2: A Baby's Ear Infection — Avoiding Antibiotics
A client came to me after her baby was diagnosed with an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. She wanted to explore whether there was another path before filling that prescription — not out of recklessness, but out of a genuine desire to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use in her infant if possible.
We worked together using appropriate homeopathic remedies for the ear infection. The baby recovered fully without needing the antibiotics.
I want to be very clear about something here, which brings me to the next and perhaps most important section of this post.
The Most Important Thing I Can Tell You About Homeopathy (And Homeopaths)
Homeopaths are not doctors. We are not licensed to diagnose, treat, or cure.
I say this not as a disclaimer buried in fine print, but as a foundational truth that I believe every person considering homeopathy deserves to hear clearly and upfront.
In the ear infection case above, the family had already seen a doctor. They had a diagnosis. They had a prescription in hand. They made an informed choice — in consultation with their physician — to try a complementary approach first.
That is the appropriate sequence. A qualified homeopath will always encourage you to see a medical doctor. We work alongside conventional medicine, not in opposition to it. If something is beyond the scope of homeopathy, I will tell you so — and I will tell you to seek medical care.
What to Expect at Your First Homeopathic Consultation
This surprises almost everyone: a first homeopathic consultation is nothing like a typical doctor's appointment.
It begins with a discovery call — a chance for us to see whether working together feels like a good fit. If we move forward, what follows is an extensive intake process that goes all the way back to birth.
We explore:
Vaccination history
Past medications and current supplements
Previous diagnoses from doctors
Emotional and psychological history, including trauma
Family of origin health patterns
Recurring dreams
Fears — both rational and seemingly irrational
Major life events and turning points
Why go so deep? Because homeopathy looks at the whole person, not just the presenting symptom. The remedy that's right for you depends on your unique constitutional picture — your physical, emotional, and mental patterns taken together.
This is fundamentally different from a model that matches a symptom to a medication. It requires time, careful listening, and genuine curiosity about who you are as a whole human being.
Homeopathy as Part of a Bigger Picture
One thing I feel strongly about — and that most homeopathy articles miss entirely — is that remedies work better when the body's foundation is strong.
In my practice, I integrate:
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) — a non-invasive test that reveals mineral imbalances and heavy metal burden at the cellular level
Dietary assessment and guidance — because what you eat is still the most powerful medicine
Occasional targeted supplementation — to address specific deficiencies
Homeopathic remedies — once the terrain is better prepared to receive them
Occupational therapy perspective — as a licensed OT, I can also assess physical mobility and help clients achieve maximum independence in their daily lives
The goal is never to create dependency on any single modality. It is to help you restore your own balance — physically, mentally, and emotionally — so that your body can do what it was designed to do.
A Final Thought
Homeopathy isn't magic, and it isn't a replacement for medical care. But for those who are open to it, it offers something that is increasingly rare in modern healthcare: a system that sees you — your full history, your fears, your dreams, your body's unique patterns — and attempts to meet you there.
I found it at forty, depleted and searching. It became part of how I understand health, healing, and what it means to truly help someone.
If you're curious whether it might be right for you, I'd love to have a conversation.
